Yes.. Another Guide to Sofa Styles.

Picking a sofa is simple right? You see a sofa online or in a store and BOOM ! it’s love at first sight or sit, if I may.

Actually for most of us picking a sofa is like walking into the stroller section of a babies r us store. Have you ever been to B.R.U to pick out a stroller? Horrifying just saying. Honestly there’s really no right or wrong style when it comes to sofa’s so take a breath and try not to get too overwhelmed. Remember this one rule.

“If You Love Something, It Will Work. That’s The Only Real Rule”
~ Bunny Williams

For This Blog I’m focusing on style, specifically arm styles. Let’s walk through a few steps when it comes to sofa styles.

Step one: Think about the styles that are available, ie, back style, cushion style and leg verse skirt styles. What’s your “go to” favorite?

Step two: Traditional verse Transitional. Think about going from a day time work outfit to a dinner party after hours. A sofa can take on a whole new look just by switching up the arm style.

Let me explain. Although there’s a handful of sofa styles available, for this blog I want to talk about my top three arm styles and how they impact a rooms feeling and ok, “comfort zone”.

Let’s begin shall we and see if one of these descriptions resonates with the look and feel you want from your sofa purchase. The three arm styles I will be focusing on (and there are so many more) 1. Rolled Arm or English Arm. 2. Track Arm with Modern Slop 3. The oh so lovely Chesterfield.

One: Rolled Arm ~ Lets talk comfort Here.

If this sofa style was equivalent to food, I would rank it right up there with meatloaf! Yes the quintessential comfort food…. Theres nothing more comfortable and reassuring than a traditional rolled arm sofa. This sofa is popular for a few reasons. First it’s very comfortable with an average seat depth of 42” making it super easy to sink into. Secondly it’s a classic one and will never go out of style. Whether you’re after a casual slip cover feeling or a more formal fancier skirt finish, this arm style fits the bill for both.

There’s no wrong answer here with fabric selections on a rolled arm either. Looking for a patterned fabric or a solid color, no problem. Here’s a few of my favorite fabric selections for this classic sofa style. Click on the photo to learn more.

Two: Track Arm With A Modern Slop

This modern silhouette has an inviting lounge-like feel. The confident curves of the sloped arm give this style a glamorous look. Its almost the perfect collection of style and comfort… Get Out!!

The track arm grabs attention and boasts a clean straight line that pairs nicely with most design styles today.

Considered both modern and contemporary the track arm sofa style reads chic!! Square edges with minimal curves add to the hand tailored look of this sofa. A true contemporary elegance if you will.

Track arm sofa’s are vastly becoming a popular choice among homeowners today. Clean lines and simple forms are the hallmark of this sofa.

Love throw pillows? This sofa is for you. Track Arms provide better support so your pillows stand up straight, the perfect solution right? Here’s a few of my top choices.

Typically constructed of luxury leather, deep buttoning, low back and high arms, this classic style introduced in the 1800’s was sure to become one of the most sought after sofa styles globally.

Once believed to be a furniture style only the wealthy could enjoy. The Chesterfield’s classic design eventually found a home in almost any traditional or modern design and decor style today.

Once upon a time the Chesterfield was perceived as a style of deep rich dark leather, deep button tufting and all over nailhead trim. Todays Chesterfield is singing a different tune for sure. Taking on a more modern style for todays homeowners the Chesterfield dresses up nicely by lighting up the hefty leather with velvet or other upholstery grade fabrics. Manufactures today are offering taller legs and slimmer backs and arms. Sure to fit todays modern spaces.

This sofa is definitely enjoying a major comeback. Pairing its elegance and tradition, the quintessential Chesterfield is finding its way back into many modern rooms.

On a final note lets talk briefly about quality in construction. While your out there shopping for that perfect pair for your home ask these few questions. I always tell my clients,

“Buy nice or buy twice”

Quality in construction starts with a few basic remedies.

  1. Hardwood frames

  2. Sinuous 8 way hand tied spring seating system

  3. Heavy blend down cushions filled in 2.0 density high resiliency Dacron.

  4. Doubled doweled glued and screwed corner block construction.
