Is Mid Century Modern Still A Thing?

Mid Century Modern is still considered one of the greatest influencers of modern interiors. This Iconic look became famous by combining urban decor with natural materials, exposed woods, earthly hues and natural lighting.

It’s important when designing MidCentury to incorporate sleek silhouettes. Find pieces with clean lines, urban vibes and tapered legs.

Lets explore this Mid Century Modern design I did this summer as we go from a simple inspirational drawing to a 3D render to final project proposal.

From 1950 through the late 60’s, Mid Century was made for dining and entertaining. It’s important when designing Mid Century to incorporate sleek silhouettes with BOLD colors, low profile furniture and color saturated sofas.

Oversize abstract paintings is a must and always follow up with that awesome oversize statement lighting.

Comfortable Living

Iconic look…….

Start with a key color palette. White or taupe walls followed by brown wood furniture. Saturate the sitting areas with color that compliments the walls and end with metal light fixtures. Farmhouse painted furniture has no place here!

Think comfortable living and entertaining. Clean lines, geometric shapes and tapered silhouettes.

Pops of Mid Century colors include; Pumpkin, orange, avocado green (yes avocado green) bright teal and mustard yellow. If this is the look you’re after, no shying away from color here.

Look for those quintessential pieces, i.e. lounge chairs, unusual coffee tables and scandinavian designs. Think industrial and blend in a few eclectic pieces. Textured upholstery, low profile furniture and tons of storage.

Movement and mingling was the top priority during this era and mixing material’s together was encouraged.

Clean lines, organic forms, high functionality and entertaining was the drive for this design style. Ergonomically designed for comfort and intense pop of color was mandatory.

Declutter was the name of the game! Tons of storage, portable pieces and smaller scale. Think thin tables and chairs with tapered legs and do’t forget your statement lighting!
